From a marketers perspective cookies are a useful tool to track people as they surf around the internet.. From a users perspective cookies leave a trail of where you surf and what you look at. This allows for companies to target ads towards you as they make a profile of your browsing techniques. Do you like the idea of companies knowing what your preferences are? I think its a neat idea to further target you but at the same time it personalizes something that has not had your inclusion.
